What is the distribution of mail and press if not an essential part of the circulation of ideas? From this historical activity, La Poste group has drawn a strong attachment to the world of culture. This artistic exchange via the post is honoured by the Musée de La Poste.
Founded in 1946 and located in the Montparnasse district of Paris since 1973, the Musée de La Poste, which has been designated a ‘Musée de France’, preserves and promotes major collections of historical and contemporary, technical and social, philatelic and artistic items.
These collections tell the story of several centuries, not only of postal activities, but also of everyday life in France and how it has changed over the years.
The Museum is also the only legal depository of the production archives for all French postage stamps.
Today, it houses 37,000 works and objects illustrating the history and work of La Poste from the Middle Ages to the present day, over 200,000 images, 30,000 printed works and over a million philatelic items, not to mention a large collection of mail art and contemporary art.
Completely renovated in 2019, the Musée de La Poste offers visitors a permanent exhibition packed with postal objects, video and sound archives, works of art and edutainment facilities.
It also designs and produces temporary exhibitions open to contemporary artists.
