Green Postal Day 2024: A Global Postal Mobilization for Climate

The Green Postal Day, celebrated on September 19th, marks the global postal cooperation around sustainability. As key players in the transport and logistics sector, postal operators fight climate change and promote more sustainable practices internationally. This day highlights the initiatives and progress made by postal services to achieve their goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

On the occasion of the sixth edition of Green Postal Day, global postal operators announced a reduction of their overall annual CO2 emissions by nearly 40% since 2008. They are committed to achieving an additional reduction of 50% by 2030, relative to their 2019 carbon emissions.

In addition to this joint commitment, the Posts aim to reach other sustainable goals by 2030:

  • Using 75% energy from renewable sources in corporate buildings;

  • A fleet of vehicles comprising at least 50% alternative fuel vehicles, including at least 25% electric vehicles;

  • 50% sustainable packaging;

  • 75% diversion of waste from landfill to recycling or reuse.

Global Cooperation for the Climate

This initiative underscores the importance of international collaboration and knowledge sharing to address current environmental challenges. By working together, postal services worldwide hope not only to minimize their own ecological impact but also to encourage communities and individuals to adopt more sustainable practices.

The climate issue is global. And if we are faced with a question, a global problem, we should be able to have a global response. Each postal service could do something, but only a global action will be effective.

La Poste Group, a Key Player in Decarbonization in France

In 2024, La Poste Group continued its efforts to decarbonize its activities. The group is the only French company certified in the fields of transport, logistics, and banking. It achieved validation by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its net-zero emission pathway by 2040. By setting a "net-zero emissions" goal by 2040, La Poste Group aligns with the targets set by the Paris Agreement a decade in advance.

This commitment is supported by an ambitious transition plan. In transport and logistics, the group continues its efforts and investments in the decarbonization of the fleets of group operators and their partners. It accelerates the electrification of vehicle fleets for the first and last mile and the development of cargo bikes. For long-distance transport, the group optimizes its transport and loading schemes and deploys the use of alternative fuels to fossil fuels.

Besides the decarbonization of transport, La Poste Group also acts on its real estate. It signed a strategic partnership with EDF at the end of 2023. The goal is to invest 400 million euros to reduce the energy consumption of 10,000 buildings by 20% and their greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2030.
